Y.C.L Update: Pre-Registration

Currently, the Young Civic Leaders have successfully passed the pre-registration bill into the House, on its way to hopefully becoming a law in Massachusetts.

For those who have no idea what pre-registration is about, here’s a brief description of what it is:

Pre-registration allows 16 and 17 year olds to “pre-register”. Then your voter registration becomes active automatically on the day of your 18th birthday. Pre-registration allows all citizen applicants for drivers’ licenses to participate in the Motor Voter law. Pre-registration does NOT change the voting age. Instead, it creates a uniform voter registration age. With pre-registration, 16 and 17 year-olds can also register to vote in a high school History, Social Studies, or Civics class. Currently, voter registration at schools, youth centers and after-school programs is ineffective because most high school students are not able to register to vote until the second half of their senior year.

Finally our goal for pre-registration is to increase the voter participation of young voters with as much ease as possible. We hope that you or your organization can join us to make this happen. Please click here to write to your state senator and click here to write to your state representative asking them to support pre-registration.
